4 Tips to Eat Healthy While Traveling
Written by: Brianna Buchholz
Summer is upon us, which means it is time to ditch the heat and head out on a vacation! A common misconception is that you can completely disregard your health and fitness goals and eat anything and everything in sight, you are on vacation after all! The truth is, while it is perfectly okay to indulge and have fun, your body needs nutrients and whole foods to thrive and provide you with the energy to keep adventuring. Here are a few tips that we use to stay on track and eat healthy while traveling:
Pack Healthy Snacks
No one wants to be around a hangry (hungry + angry) person on vacation. This is the time to relax and toss all your worries aside! Since road trips and airplane rides can be long, make sure to throw some healthy snacks in your carry-on, such as a few scoops of meal replacement shake (Try Genesis Pure’s 360 Complete Shake) or a couple Larabars. The same goes for a trip to the beach. Instead of packing chips and cookies or wasting your money on boardwalk restaurants, bring a cooler of fruits, vegetables, and homemade sandwiches made with nitrate-free lunch meat. Save your money and save your waistline!
Don’t Be Afraid to Modify
When you go out to eat, do not be afraid to modify your dish. At first glance, it can be hard to find healthy options in restaurant menus, so we encourage you to make your own! For example, order your burger without a bun and swap the side of fries for some vegetables or a side salad with light dressing on the side. Ask your server to hold sauces and dressings that can be full of sugar or unhealthy fats. There is absolutely no shame in modifying menu items to meet your nutritional requirements.
Do Your Research
I don’t know about you, but I love to research and take note of different hikes, beaches, and restaurants at my vacation destinations. I find it exciting to find out about local favorites and hidden gems that will keep my family active and healthy. Before you leave, search for a couple nearby juice bars, health food stores, or restaurants with healthy options that you can turn to instead of fast-food restaurants at the end of a long day.
Whether it is portion control or choosing between an unhealthy and a healthy option, self-control is the underlying key in eating healthy on vacation. Avoid temptations as much as possible. Sure, go out for ice cream or have some pizza, but limit yourself. If you know that you will be eating an indulgent dinner, opt for healthier meals and snacks earlier in the day. Pick your one splurge and then move on. If you find it hard to limit your portion size at restaurants, ask your server to box up half of your meal before they bring it to the table. Protect yourself from overeating, bloat, and lethargy.
