Defining the truth behind your eating can be very difficult. For many, by the time you have eaten your way through the refrigerator and pantry you realize that you were not even hungry, you were bored!
Boredom, depression, anxiety, stress and happiness are all psychological reasons that cause us to emotionally eat. In order to determine if you are eating out of hunger or emotions, you need to sit back and evaluate. Are you feeding your body or your emotions?
Here are some important questions to ask yourself before you wonder into the kitchen:
Is your stomach growling?
Real Hunger causes your stomach to rumble.
Are you craving something in particular? Is it hard to resist?
Real Hunger can usually be held off for 30-60 min before rushing to the fridge.
Emotional Hunger usually can not be delayed or ignored. It is sudden, harsh and uncontrollable.
Usually when you crave certain types of foods, such as salty or sweet or even your favorite foods, you are soothing or reducing negative feelings.
When is the last time you ate and what was is it?
You should be eating 5-6 times a day, if it has been 2 or more hours chances are you have burned and used all the fuel you have given your body and it is time for another meal or snack.
How much have you eaten for the day?
Evaluate what and when you have already eaten. Maybe your portions were smaller today than normal, or you did a more strenuous workout than you are used to. You may even realizer you skipped a meal or snack, in this case you will need to make sure you are eating enough calories and the proper nutritious foods to get back on track instead of just snacking on whats handy.
Tracking your nutritional intake will help you determine if you are reaching for those extra snacks because your body is deficient in certain nutrients or you are emotionally eating. By writing down your “mood” at each meal and snack, you will better understand your body and eating habits. Once these are defined you can take the right steps to create healthier habits.
How can you stop yourself from psychological/emotional hunger?
Try drinking water — it might be that your just thirsty
Wait and see — 30- 60 min
Try to pace yourself while eating — remember that it takes 20 min for your stomach to realize you’re full
Eat small meals throughout the day (5-6 meals are recommended)
Try chewing gum
Psychological/Emotional eating is a major problem that could lead to serious health issues. Letting your emotions control the amount and type of foods you eat can lead to increased fat storage and unwanted weight gain. Always plan your meals ahead of time and keep nutrient packed snacks on hand. Preparation is half the battle!
