How often do we roll out of bed, take one look in the mirror, and start criticizing various aspects of our appearance? We are swayed by social media and public figures telling us that we must look a certain way. We are not good enough unless we have perfectly defined abs and cellulite-free legs. These outside criticisms can be harmful enough, but allowing yourself to believe them and convince yourself that you are not beautiful is enough to ruin your day, week, month, etc.
Lindsay Hyzer, owner and trainer at Kinesis Konnection, encourages us to start everyday with positive affirmation. Instead of criticizing our bodies, pick two or three features that you often feel negatively about and tell yourself that you are beautiful. Look in the mirror every morning and focus on what you love about yourself. Choose certain words or create a phrase that help you to not only feel better about yourself, but also help you reach your goals. Repeat these words and phrases every morning for 21 days, as it takes this amount of time to create a habit. The key to this, however, is to strategically choose affirmations that you truly believe. It is important to believe in yourself and understand that you have the power to change what you can and accept what you cannot. Love your body and love what your body can do.
This Valentine’s Day season and going forth, show yourself some love and replace criticism with positive affirmation, after all, comparison is the thief of joy.
